Narrowing Down Programmable Thermostat Choices

Posted by Paul Wadsworth on Wed, Mar 23, 2011 @ 03:07 PM

Programmable thermostats have some obvious benefits for energy-conscious homeowners.  All programmable units offer the ability to pre-set temperatures in the home based on the family’s schedule.  According to EnergyStar, doing so can save you about $180 every year in energy costs.

But, there are other things to think about when choosing programmable thermostats.  They’re not all the same—some offer advanced features and technology that you may or may not need.  Think about your budget and your needs when selecting one for your home.

Here are a few considerations when shopping for programmable units:

Some units come with additional features such as:

  • remote programming
  • links to humidifiers
  • links to radiant heating systems and heat pumps
  • filter change reminders
  • voice and/or phone programming
  • hold/vacation features
  • indicators that signal malfunctioning of heating/cooling systems
  • Adaptive Recovery/ Smart Recovery features — control features that sense the amount of time it will take to reach the next set temperatures, and reach desired temperatures by the set time

Some programmable units won’t be suitable for your situation.  For example, if you have radiant floor heating, standard programmable thermostats won’t work very well.  You will need special programmable units that can anticipate the much slower response of a radiant heat system.  Others will not be compatible with your existing heating and cooling systems or power source.

The costs of these units vary widely, and the complexity of the installation is a big factor, as well.  For example, some thermostats are not do-it-yourself projects and require professional installation.   Thermostats designed for two-stage heating systems, such as electric heat pumps, are generally more expensive to purchase.

It’s best to discuss the pros and cons of any thermostat with a qualified HVAC contractor.  Advanced programmable thermostats offer convenience and energy savings.  But, they can also come with higher price tags. The experts at PK Wadsworth can tell you which ones have the features you really need for your home based on your existing heating and cooling systems, your lifestyle and your budget.
