Why Ductwork Sealing? Your Heating Bills Will Tell You

Posted by Paul Wadsworth on Mon, Apr 04, 2011 @ 03:28 PM

These days, nobody can afford to let money slip away, or through the ductwork either, for that matter.  Home heating accounts for over half of a homeowner’s yearly energy costs, and much of that money is wasted due to poorly maintained ductwork.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, leaky ducts can reduce the efficiency of your heating and cooling equipment by 20 percent.  What that means for Cleveland-area homeowners is both higher energy bills and less-than-ideal home comfort.  Ductwork sealing is a solution that makes sense.  Properly sealed ductwork prevents the loss of conditioned air that reduces your comfort and causes your HVAC equipment to work harder than it should.

Having a professional seal your ductwork ensures that the job is done right.  In our opinion, it is one of the simplest and smartest ways to improve not only the efficiency of your HVAC system, but the quality of your indoor air.  Contaminants such as carbon monoxide, mold and pollen that can be sucked into the return (negative pressure) portion of your ductwork can get circulated throughout your home and cause a number of health problems for the occupants.  On the supply (positive pressure) side of your ductwork, it just makes sense that you don’t want air that you paid to either heat or cool leak out before it gets to the rooms in your home that you want to warm up or cool down.

And, properly sealed ductwork may also allow you to downsize to a smaller, more efficient heating and cooling system if the time has come for a replacement.  In this way, duct sealing can pay for itself in greater energy savings over time.

Leaky ductwork reveals itself in a number of ways.  If you are suffering from:

  • High utility bills
  • Stuffy rooms
  • Excessive dust
  • Rooms that are too hot or cold
  • High levels of carbon monoxide or other contaminants

…it’s time to call us for an evaluation of your ductwork.  We will inspect your ducts for leaks and recommend the best course of action so that you can enjoy better indoor air quality and lower energy bills.
