After You Make Repairs From Winter Ice, Think About New Insulation

Posted by Paul Wadsworth on Wed, Apr 06, 2011 @ 03:37 PM

Were you ready for the heavy snowfall and the bitter temperatures we had this winter in Northeast Ohio? Even the fittest of homes have a hard time standing up to the amount of ice and snow we’ve seen. As heat escapes the home, it warms the roof of a house. The snowfall closest to the roof melts and, if gutters are blocked, huge icicles can build up. All that icy weight can bring gutters crashing down.

Of course, some roofing techniques can help save your gutters for next year, but you can also use the lessons of this winter to ensure you have an adequate amount of attic insulation. For our area, a standard of R-38 up to an R-60 is recommended for attics. The proper insulation, good attic ventilation and clear gutters will help to reduce further damage.

Poor attic insulation not only robs you by causing home damage, it steals your money by allowing heat to escape.  Proper insulation levels will keep more of your home heat inside your home and less on your roof. The nice thing about adding attic insulation is that the cost is a one-time expense. There’s no maintenance, no upkeep. That insulation will keep working winter after winter to keep the heat in and the cold air out.

Federal tax credits are still available for insulation upgrades to your home, too. With government budget problems looming, these tax credits won’t last forever. Chances are, once they’re gone, they will never be offered again.
