You may have heard of companies offering to perform duct cleaning services. In most cases, ducting does not cause a major problem for interior air. There are instances when duct cleaning by a qualified, professional service is warranted. Those times are when problems become obvious to the homeowner. Here are three situations that might call for a thorough and professional cleaning:
- Insect or Rodent Infestation–If you find evidence that squirrels, rats or mice are inside your ducts, or that bees or other insects are inhabiting the ducts, get them cleaned. These instances are rare but can happen. A break in the ducting can allow insects or rodents inside. Nesting material, fecal matter, hair and bacteria can then enter the home.
- Mold Growth–If you find there is mold growth at, around or near air registers, or growing on surfaces of the ducts, there may be a problem. Mold spores can be carried through the air inside ducts and can form colonies in the home on surfaces conducive to mold growth. Have a test made of the suspected material and consult with a professional heating and air service to determine if duct cleaning is needed.
- Vent Dust–Duct cleaning may also be required if you see evidence of large amounts of dust coming through the registers into the home. When debris and dust are clearly visible, there can be such large amounts clogging the ducts that it is infiltrating inside air. A good duct cleaning and examination is needed to determine why there is so much debris inside the ducts.
Duct cleaning is not a necessity unless there are obvious problems. Then, make sure to get an inspection and an explanation of how the duct cleaning is to be performed. A light amount of dust inside ducts is quite normal and is not going to be a serious risk.
