Why Your Home Needs A Zoning System

Posted by Paul Wadsworth on Tue, Dec 07, 2010 @ 12:59 PM

Many of us have experienced uncomfortable temperature variations in the different rooms in our homes, and it often happens that there’s one particular room that always seems warmer or colder than the others. This can happen due to poor insulation, inefficient delivery of warm or cool air, or because of heat loss through your windows. Additionally, it could simply be the result of location: an upstairs where warm air rises and causes overheating or a room above the garage.  To maximize your comfort and cut down your energy bills, you should consider the benefits of an HVAC zoning system.

In simple terms, a zoning system consists of multiple thermostats which are connected to a central control panel, allowing you to adjust temperatures in specific rooms without affecting parts of your home which are already at the correct level of warmth or coolness. When used correctly, zoning systems can save you as much as 30 percent (or more) off the overall cost of heating or cooling your home.

The reasoning behind these savings is simple. Instead of heating or cooling rooms that you may not use very often, such as spare bedrooms, home offices, workshops and basements, you can leave these areas alone and heat or cool only the parts of the house you’re occupying.

Retrofitting your home to include HVAC zoning systems doesn’t have to be a complex, involved and expensive process requiring major upgrades to your ducts, either. Even a simple two-zone system between the upstairs rooms and the downstairs rooms, for example, can go a long ways towards cutting your energy bills. In many cases, the savings you realize in the form of reduced power bills ends up equalling or exceeding the investment you made to install the zoning system.
