Air-Conditioning System Conked Out? Use These Replacement Questions

Posted by Paul Wadsworth on Mon, Aug 08, 2011 @ 09:44 AM

If you're in the market for an air conditioning system replacement, you probably have a lot of questions. An air conditioner is a major purchase, and you want to find a unit that fits your home and budget, will perform well for years and will work efficiently, consuming as little energy as possible.

QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER WHENquestions to consider for air conditioner replacement EXPLORING AIR CONDITIONER OPTIONS

Here are some important questions to consider as you exploring your options:

How powerful should my new air conditioner be? Sizing your air conditioning system replacement is a key first step to replacing your existing unit. Simply putting in the same size that is existing is not always the right solution.  This is especially true if you have done anything to improve the energy efficiency of your home like added insulation, replacement windows, etc.  Too big and you are buying more machine than is needed and you are overpaying.  Additionally, too large a cooling unit may not run long enough causing less humidity to be removed from the air leaving you with a cave-like feeling.

The best way to determine exactly how powerful an air conditioner you need to meet your home's cooling needs is to get a professional load calculation. This ensures that you won't overpay for a system that's too powerful or invest in a unit that's unable to fully meet your requirements.

How can I tell how energy efficient a given air conditioner is? There are two ways to do this. The simplest is to look for units that bear the Energy Star seal; these are at least 10 percent more efficient than required by government standards. You can also check the air conditioner's SEER, or seasonal energy efficiency ratio, rating. The higher it is, the more efficient the air conditioner.

What power source should I choose? Most A/Cs run on electricity. If you're looking for an energy-efficiency overhaul or some options to assist your heating season demands, consider geothermal and air-source heat pumps.  For those of you in sunny climates, you might consider a solar ready or solar assisted unit.

How can I find a reliable contractor? Look for well-established local companies that have a proven track record for providing quality products and excellent service.
