A forced-air furnace is one of the more common types of heating systems used in households across America. These systems usually burn natural gas or use electricity to create heat, which is then "forced" from the furnace and into your home.
The main components of a forced-air furnace system are:
- Thermostat - Controls the furnace's operation and allows you to set the temperatures you want for your indoor living spaces.
- Furnace - The main unit where air is heated. The furnace contains flame-producing burners or electric coils that create heat.
- Blower - Sometimes called the air handler, this is the fan that forces air out of the furnace unit, through the supply ductwork and into your home.
- Supply ductwork - The network of large metal pipes that serve as the air distribution channel for the warm air coming from your furnace.
- Return ductwork - Sometimes called duct returns or cold-air ducts, these pipes bring cooled air back to your furnace to be reused.
A heating cycle begins when you set the temperature you want at the thermostat. When the temperature in your home falls below that level, the thermostat senses the change and switches on the furnace. Fuel-based flames or electric heating coils activate and produce heat.
As heat is generated, it's transferred to a component called a heat exchanger. The blower then sends air across the heat exchanger. The air absorbs heat and is warmed to a sufficient temperature for home comfort. The warmed air continues into the supply ductwork and exits at registers and vents throughout your home.
After the heat is expended, air is brought back to the furnace through the return ductwork. There, it is filtered, reheated and recirculated. This continues until the thermostat senses that temperatures have increased to the level you selected. The furnace shuts off until temperatures drop, and the heating cycle starts again.
