Protect Your Home's Indoor Air Quality as Spring Moves In With These Six Tips

Ventilation and Air Cleaning Systems

The most effective types of ventilation and air cleaning systems for improved indoor air quality are whole-home systems. Consider these for your greater Cleveland area home.

  • A whole-home dehumidifier helps manage humidity levels during the cooling months--especially in the spring and fall. Excess moisture invites mold, encourages the spread of dust mites and increases cooling bills. A whole-home dehumidifier is attached to the air ducts by your HVAC technician for easy and automatic operation.
  • An air purification system combines HEPA filtration, deodorizing filtration and ultra-violet technology (UV lights) for capturing, neutralizing and destroying particles, gases and microorganisms.
  • A heat recovery ventilator (HRV) uses a heat-exchange core to deliver balanced fresh air ventilation, while simultaneously transferring heat energy from intake fresh air to the stuffy exhaust air. This saves cooling costs for fresh air in any weather and helps manage humidity, too. HRVs are excellent for the heating months, transferring heat energy to intake cold air.

Tidy Home

Mechanical air quality technologies work wonders for home and health, but good old-fashioned spring cleaning and regular cleaning habits help with hay fever, health and spirits. Try to work these tips into your routine for managing and disposing of indoor contaminants:

  • Put a shoe rack by the entry door and make your carpet or flooring a no-shoes zone. All kinds of contaminants, allergens, dirt and germs are tracked in on the soles of shoes. This way, you'll also enjoy cleaner carpet and flooring.
  • Kitchen cleaning is important to prevent cross contamination when cooking and subsequent illness. Replace sponges once a week or soak sponges in a half-and-half bleach and water solution for 15 minutes.
  • Dust mites can trigger allergies in anyone. Wash bedding regularly and consider using allergy-proof coverings for pillows and mattresses.
