No one likes mold, but it’s something we all have to live with. Scientists have identified more than 300,000 varieties, so avoiding mold is just not practical. Usually, the only time mold becomes life-threatening is when it grows in the right environment inside a home.
Mold spores travel through the air, land on our clothing or pet’s fur and end up in homes. If conditions are not right, the spores die and are not a problem. When mold spores find the right conditions, however, they begin to produce colonies. The primary need is humidity.
Although our area of Northeastern Ohio is not prone to severe high humidity in spring and summer, we receive large amounts of winter snow and spring rains. This can cause flooding in basements and crawl spaces, or leaks in roofs. Here are some things to look out for in your home:
- Condensation–Condensation occurring on window glass, pipes, in basement areas or on metal supports or ducts is a sign of high humidity. Clean up the moisture and use a de-humidifier to keep moisture levels low.
- Leaks–Pipe leaks, faucet leaks, water seeping through basement walls must be corrected. These areas supply the moisture needed for mold colonies.
- High Humidity Areas–Bathrooms, kitchens and laundry rooms are areas that can generate high levels of humidity. Proper ventilation in these areas can reduce it. Fans or de-humidifiers can also be used to disperse the moisture and reduce the humidity.
- Hidden Mold–Mold growth can begin behind wallpaper, under carpets or inside walls. If you smell the stale, musty odor of mold, investigate the suspected area for mold growth.
If caught early, you can sometimes clean up small mold problems. Use gloves, a respirator or mask and detergent or a common household cleaner to remove the mold. Large colonies or large areas of growth under carpets, behind wallpaper or walls may need professional cleaning. If you suspect mold problems or you have high humidity in your home, call us at P.K.
